Fall Has Arrived!

Fall Has Arrived!

The first day of Fall, or Autumn as it’s more commonly referred to across the pond, was on Sunday, September 22nd. That means summer is officially over. Yesssssssssssss! No more annoying bugs swirling around your head while you’re having morning coffee on the patio, no more midday sun capable of melting us like Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard of OZ and, for you fellow introverts out there, no more awkward backyard BBQs or beachfront weddings. So, maybe you’re a “salt life” sun-worshipper who dreads hoodie weather. Don’t be sad, there will be another 93.6 sunny summer days waiting for you in 2025.

Fall is the best season. Yep, I said it. In fact, most Americans agree. Below, we’re going to address some of the reasons it routinely comes out on top in seasonal polls.

Number one, according to VeryWellMind.com, is routine. Most people find comfort and stability in routine. When the sun comes shining, people want to go outside. Yuck. While vampires like myself will never quite get it, most people enjoy spending time in the sun. So, they schedule their vacations, organize their social events and, generally, arrange their lives in a way they can get outside and take advantage of the warm weather. Once Fall comes around, people spend more time indoors and are less likely to make plans which detract from their routine. Additionally, the kinds of things that are going on in the fall, such as school and sporting events, are very regimented.

Number two, is the flavors. After a summer of indulging on hamburgers, hotdogs, ribs, pulled pork and all the fixins’, autumnal veggies, soups and chilis and hearty regional favorites are a welcomed reset. Of course, there will be pumpkin spice everywhere. In your coffee, tea, baked goods, pancakes, breads, candy, soda and beer. Fun fact, there’s no pumpkin in that pumpkin spice. I know, I just shattered your whole universe. However, pumpkin spice usually contains cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. It’s named pumpkin spice because the combination of those flavors is often used to flavor pumpkin-based dishes.

The vibes. You can’t deny that Fall has a special atmosphere that simply cannot be topped by the likes of summer. If summer had a smell, it would be barbecuing sauce, sunblock and fresh mulch. Fall comes with cloves, pumpkin, vanilla, leaves, apple cinnamon and bonfires. Fall, not being winter, is usually accompanied by cool, as opposed to the kind of frigid air Frosty the Snowman would regail in. Not being summer, it’s easier to breathe and you can offset any discomfort by the simple addition of a light sweater. It’s the perfect middle. Contributing to the inescapable aurora of fall is the arrival of…

Spooky season. Yes, if the ghosts, goblins and ghouls picked their favorite season, it would be a lot like when Americans pick theirs. Which is to say, Fall is winning hands down. It’s the only season of the year where it’s perfectly normal to see bats, black cats, cauldrons, mummies and fictional serial killers standing on the front lawns of residential homes and businesses. Which is why the mailman shakes his head at the bat-shaped rug on my front porch in June.

We’re nearing the end of the year. Again, this might depress some but as the great Semisonic once sang, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Once the leaves start coming down, the rest of the year comes fast. Next, it’s Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then bam! It’s January 1st. Time for that New Year’s resolution. While we can make changes in our lives anytime, there’s something extra motivating about that particular day winking at us from the calendar page.

I suppose it’s also a good time to mention that if you’re in the market for a new home, the Federal Reserve recently reduced interest rates by a half percentage point. The first of more expected decreases as we head into 2025. Speak to an agent from your local branch of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Stouffer Realty to get things started, today. After all, you know all those homes you look at will reek of pumpkin spice and that’s NOT a bad thing!
