How To Keep Your House Plants Alive During The Winter
Ohio winters mean gray days and cold temperatures. The combination of these two things might have your houseplants longing for summer and warmer weather. Now that we are in the heart of winter, it's time to give your houseplants a little extra attention to help them survive the rest of the season. Check out our tips below on how to help your houseplants thrive this winter! Move Plants Away from Heat Sources Most plants aren’t big fans of extreme temperatures. Try to keep them away from spots that get either too chilly or heated such as radiators, vents, or drafty windows. Position sun-loving plants on a side table near the window, but not directly on the windowsill. Check the Humidity Most common houseplants thrive in 40-50% humidity, but when the heat is blasting and the windows are closed, the moisture level in your home is likely much lower. The easiest solution is to buy a humidifier. Amazon has some really great options for good prices, but if that seems like a big investment, add in your own humidity. Plants will thrive if you use a spray bottle to mist the leaves. Repeat this process 1-2 times a week for healthy-looking plants. Dust Your Plants Just as you would dust your counters, you need to dust your plants! Dust tends to build up on the leaves of plants, leaving a film that can prevent new growth and harm the current leaves. To dust your plant, use a damp microfiber cloth or paper towel. Gently wipe down each of the leaves and then mist after. Plants with larger leaves like a fiddle leaf fig or monstera will really benefit from being dusted! Make Sure You Are Not Overwatering Because it’s winter, your plants will not need as much water as they did over the summer. If you are confused about how to pick a watering schedule, check the moisture of your plant. The best way to check the soil moisture is to poke your finger 2 inches below the surface, as the top of the soil dries out first. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, you can use a chopstick instead of your finger! There are also apps that you can use to track your watering schedule. They will automatically adjust for the season and give you more tips on how to keep your plant healthy. Make Sure There is Enough Light Because it’s winter, your plants are going to receive less natural sunlight. To make sure they are getting enough light to survive, move your plants closer to a window. But don’t move them too close. If your windows freeze over, make sure that your plants have enough distance from the glass, so they don’t freeze too! If your plants are showing signs of not enough light, try placing an artificial bulb, specifically designed for plants to provide light and heat, above any houseplants that are starting to show signs of winter wear. It’ll keep them alive longer, and hopefully brighten your day too. Houseplants are a great decoration and they purify the air in our houses. To keep them healthy and happy all winter long, give them a little extra attention and follow our simple steps.
