We had Doug recommended to us from our mortgage company and was told he was a “wonderful representative of Berkshire and Hathaway”. Doug showed up but we did all of the work; we found the houses, we checked auditor sites, checked for liens, the list goes on. Most realtors will help you with finding a house at the bare minimum but that was not the case; he just added us to a portal and consistently did not follow up. He did not help us with information when it comes to putting in an offer, how the process works and what to expect. Additionally, we are an LGBT couple and we felt constantly that we were paired with someone who genuinely did not have our best interest at heart. He drove us away from two houses located in areas we enjoyed specifically highlighting how “the comps in the area didn’t look great” but with both houses on those streets had LGBT flags and yard signs in neighboring yards. We found a house and asked Doug to see it and shortly after, to put in an to put an offer on our behalf but he wrote the first offer $100,000 under asking on the official offer, we checked and changed all of the incorrect amounts and sent it back for him to officially change. He sent us a corrected offer and it was rather thin but, not knowing any better at the time, ran with in. We had been approved for both FHA and convential but he listed our offer as an FHA loan, no escalation clause, and missing a lot of features we would’ve liked to have (in hindsight). Once the offer was put in, we didn’t hear from him unless we said something. Once he got the news, the only thing he said was “Unfortunately, the buyers when with another offer.” We thanked him right after that and waited. Defeated, we hoped he’d find a new house for us to see or at least put the effort in knowing we were obviously serious about buying a home. However, we waited 10 days to hear anything from Doug; radio silence for over a week after putting our offer in with absolutely no attempt to find another home for us or reach out to us. On day 10, we assumed Doug no longer wanted to work with us since we had texted him and not heard back and went and interviewed five other realtors and found one that was active in helping us find our dream home! Later that day, Doug texted us saying he was sorry he hadn’t reach out and said that if we wanted to see a home, to let him know. Our new agent went and found homes for us, broke down dozens of components of an offer and how we can make our offer better, WITHOUT HAVING TO ASK OR BEG took our availability, guidelines, budget and dream location and got us in the door of houses that were exactly what we were looking for without us having to be glued to the housing portal whenever one came on the market. I truly and sincerely hope Doug is NOT a true representation of Berkshire and Hathaway. There are more comprehensive realtors out there who will ensure you get the home you want!
